Security and air-gap
The design physically eliminates USB, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi — they're absent at the hardware level, not just disabled in software. That puts the S1 close to the Ellipal Titan's philosophy, though the Titan goes further with a rugged, waterproof housing and tamper detection. The lack of a data port removes an entire class of attacks involving malware on the host device. The open-source question needs a caveat: SafePal has announced opening parts of its ecosystem (including the app), but independent reviews indicate the S1's own firmware isn't fully public the way Trezor's is.
