Security and open source
Like Trust Wallet, Exodus is non-custodial — keys are generated and stored locally, encrypted on your device, not on the company's servers. It's still a hot wallet, though: the app runs on a device that's constantly connected to the internet, so its security depends on the security of the computer or phone it's running on — malware on that same device could in theory try to intercept data, something a hardware wallet with an isolated secure element avoids by design. Exodus describes itself as "open source," but that's only partially true — only some components are publicly available, while the core logic remains closed. The company explains this as a way to make code analysis harder for attackers — the opposite philosophy from the fully transparent Trezor. For extra security, Exodus offers integration with Trezor — keys stay on the Trezor, and Exodus serves as the interface.
