Seed phrase (recovery phrase)

A sequence of 12-24 random words from which all of a wallet's private keys can be restored.

A seed phrase (recovery phrase, mnemonic phrase) is a set of usually 12 or 24 words in a fixed order, generated when a wallet is created, from which all associated private keys are mathematically derived. It's the only way to restore access to your funds if you lose or damage the device holding your wallet.

Because the recovery phrase grants full access to your funds — just like a private key — it should be written down offline only (e.g., on paper) and kept in a secure place. No legitimate exchange, wallet, or support team will ever ask you for it.
