About Gemini
Gemini is a cryptocurrency exchange run by Gemini Trust Company, founded in 2014 in New York. The exchange is regulated by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), which makes it one of the more trustworthy platforms in the market from a regulatory standpoint. Gemini currently lists more than 75 cryptocurrencies for trading and is available in over 60 countries worldwide, plus all 50 US states.
Gemini has no publicly documented breach of its own exchange systems. That said, it's worth being precise about a related episode: Gemini Earn, a separate lending product (discussed below), was caught up in a serious crisis in 2022-2023 tied to the collapse of its lending partner Genesis. That was a counterparty and lending failure, not a hack or security breach of Gemini's exchange infrastructure, and the two shouldn't be conflated.
Trading Fees
Gemini's trading fees are relatively low compared to many competitors. The exchange uses 10 fee tiers based on 30-day trading volume — the first tier starts at 0.20% maker / 0.40% taker plus a 0.01% auction fee, while the top tier can drop as low as 0.00% maker / 0.03% taker with no auction fee. Stablecoin trading is commission-free on Gemini.
Gemini Earn
Gemini Earn was designed to let customers earn interest on crypto holdings, including stablecoins, with some assets historically offering APY as high as 8.05%, available to users across all US states as well as Singapore and Hong Kong. Importantly, Gemini Earn's interest-bearing product was suspended during the 2022-2023 crisis linked to Genesis's collapse, and its exact status has changed over time as the situation was worked through. Anyone considering Gemini Earn today should check current availability and terms directly on Gemini's site rather than assume the product is operating exactly as described historically.
Gemini Credit Card
Gemini offers a free Mastercard credit card that gives cardholders up to 3% cashback on purchases. The card is currently available only to customers based in the US.
Gemini Dollar (GUSD)
Gemini issues its own stablecoin, GUSD, which is always redeemable 1:1 for US dollars. More than 25 external platforms support GUSD — unlike many exchanges whose proprietary stablecoins are only usable on their own platform. Trading GUSD on Gemini is commission-free, and the token is also supported within Gemini Earn.
Gemini ActiveTrader
For more advanced traders, Gemini offers ActiveTrader, a high-performance trading platform built around continuous orders, block trading, and auctions. It's optimized for use in a mobile browser, letting traders operate from anywhere, with orders executed on a microsecond timescale.
Gemini Clearing
Gemini Clearing is a settlement service that allows two parties to securely settle a transaction between themselves, with Gemini acting as the confirming party for the trade.
