About Bitstamp
Bitstamp is a well-regarded cryptocurrency exchange, widely considered one of the more reliable platforms in the market, with some of the lowest trading fees around. It was founded in 2011 in London and holds licenses from the New York State Department of Financial Services as well as an EU payment institution license. Bitstamp currently lists around 60 cryptocurrencies and serves more than 4 million customers worldwide, with daily trading volume of roughly $195 million.
The exchange is available in more than 80 countries, including throughout the EU and the US, where it may require additional identity verification steps. The German business magazine Capital has recognized Bitstamp as one of the few exchanges that combines good value for money with high security standards.
In 2025, Bitstamp was acquired by Robinhood, a development that brought the exchange under the umbrella of a much larger, publicly traded financial services company — a scale and legitimacy signal in its own right for an exchange that had operated independently for over a decade.
Security Incident History
Bitstamp experienced a security breach in January 2015, in which just under 19,000 BTC (worth roughly $5 million at the time) was stolen from the exchange's operational wallet. In response, Bitstamp suspended service for about a week while it investigated the breach and shored up its security infrastructure before reopening. That incident is now over a decade old, and Bitstamp has operated without a repeat security breach since — a track record reinforced by its subsequent licensing, its institutional-grade fund security guarantee, and its 2025 acquisition by Robinhood.
Trading Fees
Bitstamp runs a competitive fee schedule with 17 tiers based on 30-day trading volume. Fees start at 0.50% maker / 0.50% taker and drop by 50% at the second tier, down to 0.25% / 0.25%. A fee-free tier exists as well, though it requires $20,000,000 in 30-day trading volume to reach. Most fiat and crypto deposit methods are free, with the exception of bank transfers (0.05%) and credit/debit card deposits.
Bitstamp Earn
Through Bitstamp Earn, customers can earn interest by staking crypto assets. Currently only two assets are available for staking — ETH and Algorand — though the list is expected to grow over time. Rewards can reach up to 5% APY, and payouts are expected to increase as more coins are added to the program. Bitstamp Earn is not available to customers based in the US.
